Guidelines for Graduate Program of Taiwan Studies for In-service Teachers, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Tsing Hua University

1. Program Duration

The program duration is a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years.

2. Graduation Credit Requirements

A total of 24 credits is required, including:

  • Core Courses: 9 credits
  • Elective Courses: 15 credits
  • Master’s Thesis: 0 credits
  • Academic Ethics: 0 credits

(1) Core Courses: 9 credits

  • Mandatory Courses: Cultural Anthropology and Taiwanese Literary Classics.
  • Elective Core Courses: Select one course from Taiwanese Society and Culture or Modern Literary Research and Practice.

(2) Elective Courses: 15 credits

Elective credits should be primarily completed through required and elective courses offered by the two host departments, with additional options from other departments within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Courses from other colleges or institutions are not eligible unless necessary for the thesis, in which case approval must be obtained from the student’s advisor and the program committee.

(3) Academic Ethics

This requirement is completed online.

(4) Credit Transfer

Credit transfer applications should be submitted before the start of each academic year and require program committee approval. A maximum of 6 credits can be transferred.


3. Class Schedule

  1. Core Courses: Offered on Saturdays, with two courses (6 credits in total) scheduled in the morning and afternoon.
  2. Program-Specific Electives: Held on weekday evenings (Monday through Friday) with flexible scheduling.
  3. College Electives: Courses required and elective for general students within the college, including daytime and evening options, are available to program students.

4. Master’s Thesis

  1. Advisor Selection: Master’s students must select an advisor by the second academic year and submit an advisor approval form in duplicate, with one copy retained by the program office and one forwarded to the host department.
  2. Thesis Requirement: Students must complete a thesis, which may take the form of a written dissertation or a documentary production with issue analysis.
  3. Written Dissertation: Must be at least 50,000 words. A thesis outline should be submitted one semester prior to advisor approval.
  4. Documentary Production with Issue Analysis: Requires submission of a production plan one semester in advance for advisor approval. The completed documentary must be publicly screened, accompanied by a written analysis of at least 20,000 words.
  5. Oral Defense: The oral defense must be completed by the end of January or July each academic year. Students should submit all review materials at least two weeks prior to the defense.

5. Advisor Guidelines

  1. Each master’s student is assigned a single advisor.
  2. Priority is given to full-time faculty from the host department, followed by part-time faculty.
  3. Advisors from other departments require prior approval, with a co-advisor from the host department. Program director consent is also required.
  4. Part-time advisors may also be appointed with prior approval, requiring a co-advisor from the host department.
  5. Full-time faculty may supervise up to three students per cohort. Additional advisees require program director approval.
