Master's Thesis

  1. Students should confirm their thesis advisor by mid-September of the second academic year and submit two copies of the advisor's consent form to the program. An additional copy will be forwarded to the advisor's affiliated supporting department by the assistant.
  2. Students must complete a master's thesis, which can be in the form of a traditional written paper or an audio-visual record.
    • For a written thesis, it should be approximately 50,000 words. A thesis outline should be submitted and approved by the advisor before thesis writing begins.
    • If the thesis is in the form of an audio-visual record, students must submit a production plan during the semester preceding the thesis proposal. After approval by the advisor, this can serve as the thesis topic. The record must be publicly presented, accompanied by a production concept or technical report of at least 20,000 words. It will be evaluated through a work review and an oral defense.
    • Thesis defenses must be completed by the end of July in the second semester of each academic year, with thesis submission two weeks prior to the defense. A report on thesis similarity must be provided for reference by the examining committee, with a similarity level below 30% as the principle.

Thesis Advisor

  • Each master's student will typically have a single thesis advisor.
  • Priority for advisors is as follows: first, professors from supporting and sponsoring departments of this program; second, professors from other departments at this university; third, adjunct or external professors.
  • If a student requests guidance from a professor from another department at this university, the program director's approval is required, and discussions with the professor will follow.
  • If a student wishes to have co-advisors, one must apply in advance, and a supporting department's full-time professor from this program must serve as one of the co-advisors.
  • Full-time professors from supporting and sponsoring departments of this program are generally allowed to advise up to three students in the same cohort. Any exceptions must be discussed and decided upon by the thesis advisor and program director.
  • Adjunct professors may advise a maximum of two students in the same cohort.
